MINNEAPOLIS—As healthcare leaps, or is pushed, toward next-generation EMRs/EHRs, imaging informatics and enterprise hospital IT need to work together, learn from each other and leverage the expertise of other industries, said Paul Chang, MD, vice chairman of radiology informatics at University of Chicago Medical Center during the SIIM 2010 Dwyer Lecture.
The Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC), a non-profit standards development organization and accrediting body, has submitted comments to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) regarding the proposed establishment of certification programs for health IT by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health IT, Department of Health and Human Services.
The Health IT Policy Committee has adopted and endorsed recommendations from two workgroups on certification and privacy concerning the notice of proposed rulemaking of health IT certification bodies.
Clinical documentation plays a central role in EHRs and occupies a substantial amount of physicians’ time, but documentation practices have largely been dictated by billing and legal requirements, according to a New England Journal of Medicine online article published by Gordon D. Schiff, MD, and David W. Bates, MD, on March 25. The authors urged physicians to “take back” ownership of the medical record as a tool for improving patient care.

ATLANTA--The government's plan for meaningful use with EHR implementations are helpful but might not be entirely feasible, said Michael J. Mirro, MD, of Fort Wayne Cardiology in Indiana, during a discussion of the pros and pitfalls of EHR adoption yesterday at the 59th annual American College of Cardiology (ACC) scientific session.
ATLANTA--David Hunt, MD, chief medical officer and acting director of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), described the work ahead for his agency. “At ONC, 2010 is a bit of a moment. It’s incredibly exciting and more than a little bit scary,” Hunt conveyed during the opening keynote of the Physicians IT Symposium today at HIMSS10.

The government has taken unprecedented steps to support the adoption of EHRs for physician practices through the passage of the ARRA. This session will look into the future and envision what a practice would look like if it took advantage of an EHR implementation after 2015.

Research, published in the January/February issue Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, found the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) Trial Implementations project showed “proposed data specifications as the starting point for data exchange nationally were quite suitable for the goals of the project and for the eventual NHIN rollout,” said lead author Gilad J. Kuperman, MD, PhD., in an interview.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) are encouraging public comment on the two regulations issued Dec. 30 that lay a foundation for meaningful use of certified EHR technology. The regulations will help implement the EHR incentive programs enacted under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Pulse Systems has reported that its EHR product, included in Pulse Patient Relationship Management 4.1.02, is the first to receive full certification from the Certification Commission for Health IT (CCHIT) as a fully CCHIT Certified 2011 Ambulatory EHR, with additional certification in child health.
