After many complaints about how the Meaningful Use deadline did not allow vendors enough time to upgrade their software to meet the requirements, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the deadline for the MU hardship exemption.

Eligible professionals (EPs) have until July 1 and eligible hospitals (EHs) have until April 1, as first reported by  Modern Healthcare.

The extension allows providers to "have sufficient time to submit their applications to avoid adjustments to their Medicare payments in 2017," according to the agency.

CMS also released new “streamlined” hardship exception  application forms “that reduce the amount of information [EPs and EHs] must submit to apply for an exception."

Hardships exemption may be granted for unavailability of federally tested and certified software capable of meeting the government's requirements, problems with internet connectivity, and natural disasters, among other reasons.
