Congress has passed a bill that provides a blanket  hardship exemption for providers attesting to Meaningful Use (MU).

The bill, S. 2425, ensures that eligible  hospitals and professionals have the flexibility to submit a hardship exemption to avoid  reimbursement penalties in 2017. Eligible professionals have until March 15 to apply for exemption, and hospitals have until April 1.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) currently issues exemptions on a case-by-base basis. The legislation would create a blanket hardship exemption from 2015 MU penalties, which would have been assessed in 2017.

The bill will become law once President Obama signs it.
