HHS struggling mightily to attract IT talent

The Department of Health & Human Services is facing a serious IT staffing crisis, and the numbers tell the story.

More than 40 percent of HHS’s cyber and infrastructure posts are unfilled, 70 percent of its IT staff is over the age of 47 and, bogged down by bureaucracy, HHS has to spend nine months just to clear a position description.

“[W]e’ve put ourselves in a corner where we cannot be competitive” with the private sector, Beth Killoran, acting CIO, said in a Feb. 18 panel discussion hosted by the nonprofit Association for Federal Information Resources Management.
